Nicolai Schorr writes and plays songs. With his spoken sung vocals and quietly virtuosic guitar playing, the songs clearly refer to some tradition of songwriting. Something from folk music perhaps, something from the blues – and yet they are shot through a filter very much his own. They are like haikus, distilled vignettes of domestic life, routines and movement, rife with melodies and refrains that creep up on you and reward your attention. Gracefully moving on the spot, the songs are of a restrained emotional power, carving out a space that manages to capture something of our present while dreaming of the future.
